is a person deaf?
I take as my example a person here in the care home. My thoughts are really about my impressions and general conclusions from a few encounters.
If I hear clearly a person's voice way down the corridor, and the addressee replies that she cannot hear what the person is saying, my conclusion is one of stone deafness. This I found strange.
The person always responds pretty negatively when I speak or otherwise respond to her. So my conclusion was rather a surprise. Then I started considering the possibility she is indeed completely deaf, and her responses have nothing to do with what is said, but that she is geared up to fend people away.
If anyone is trying to help her, this automatic reaction has to be avoided in some way. It may sound stupid, but I think one has to have a printed carboard notice on a stick that you can 'wave' in front of her, saying 'what did I say?'
Until one can establish that she can hear one, one will just
waste one's time.
The only person she gangs up with cannot talk. I rest my case.
