I think, therefore the universe is quite large.
The idea is that we can calculate that given the size and age of the universe, inteligent life must exist in really quite a large number of places. But it is interesting to turn this argument inside out.
If you can think, then you know that the universe or whatever around you must be pretty big. You do not have to be able to see it at all. You might be living in a large dust cloud, for example. So man should have been able to predict the existence of multiple worlds without ever having seen the night sky.
I suppose one might think that the world could be very old, rather than very common, but that would be dismissed by the running down of energy supplies.
The only other obvious logic would be to believe in Gods.
So the discovery of the size of the universe by astronomers really put pay to the god idea. You really did not want both things together.
